I. Problem Statement

·        Over 5,000 women die every year due to birth complications and 33,000 children die every year due in the first 28 days of life.

·        8% of maternal deaths is attributed to unsafe abortions.

·        Some of the risk factors for neonatal mortalities include early childbearing and closely spaced births of less than 24 months.

II. Goal and Approach

The goal of the SRH program is to contribute to the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality by achieving the MOH goal of contraceptive prevalence of 64% and unmet need for family planning of 10% by the year 2030.

The program will approach this by

·        Expanding choice of contraceptives by introduction of new methods into the method mix (hormonal IUD)

·        Ensuring sustainable funding for commodity procurement

Intervention across Thematic Areas

Service Delivery

  • Ensure coordinated demand generation and community sensitization for hormonal IUD
  • Coordinate support supervision and mentorship of trained providers
  • Ensure partner coordination throughout the introduction process

Supply Chain

  •  Forecasting and quantification of FP commodities including hormonal IUD
  • Ensure timely procurement of FP commodities
  • Track distribution of commodities and monitor stock outs at facilities

Data & Data use

  • Track training of providers on hormonal IUD
  • Monitor and report uptake trends of hormonal IUD including discontinuation
  • Coordinate monitoring and evaluation of the introduction of hormonal IUD

Health Financing

  • Ensure that GOK progressively increases allocation and disbursement for FP procurements and fund 100% of the requirement by 2026
  • Identify hormonal IUD introduction resource gaps and advocate for funds to fill gap
